Another fantastic endeavor.  Thanks to the Spam Daddies and the nearly twenty entrants.  Amy Kercher won Best and Most Unusual with her SPAM Apple Tart.  An anonymous SPAM cheese log achieved worst.  Honorable mention were the lasagna, southwest casserole, mushroom caps, and SPAMmeled Eggs.  On a personal note, my tribute to Julia Child, an aspic SPAM en Gele’e (there was quite a bit left…odd), in being transported home the hundred degree heat caused the gelatin to lose integrity.  The application of brakes at the first stoplight had disastrous results to the interior of the car.  Anyway, thanks to all!  Looking forward to doing it again in 364!

As Flag Day approaches The Deli is once more pleased to announce our semi-annual celebration of that star-spangled potted meat, SPAM.  Categories are Best, Worst, and Most Unusual.  Offerings must be comprised of 30% original SPAM by weight.  The SPAM Daddies will provide dining music and SPAM tributes and haikus shall be proffered.  Past winners have been Spew (SPAM stew), SPAMsagna, Spushi, SPAM chili, and chocolate covered SPAM on a stick.  Because of the SPAM kim-chee submitted a few years ago we must refuse entry of any fermented SPAM products on both aesthetic and bio-hazard grounds.

The place and hour of worship shall be The Deli, 309 White St, Sunday, June 13th, 5:00 p.m.  For further info contact 329-3534 after 3:00 p.m.  It’s not just SPAM, it’s an adventure!

Her work ethic, competence and raw talent set her apart in a sea of uninspired so-called competitors. But she is her own worst critic; everything heard and seen has been relentlessly revised and perfected. This consistent dedication and fidelity to originality makes Stephanie Briggs simply worth listening to.

If you ask Todd and Eric Fink of The Giving Tree Band how much time they spend making music, your voice will not be heard above the din of their banjo and guitar, respectively. For the Brothers Fink, there is no distinction between playing music and just plain living. No two days are ever the same, as every new moment is their most creative. Their bodies and instruments become a singularity that is just trying to get in tune, stay in tune, and add a little harmony to the grand symphony of life.

When asked to cite influences, they will rarely speak of musical figures. They will proudly recite their genealogy, and celebrate the direct bloodline flowing from Mike Fink, the legendary folk hero known for his exploits on the Mighty Mississippi River. On their mother’s side, the sol smiles down on the path that connects them with Hernando de Soto, the Spanish conquistador who first discovered the aforementioned Mississippi. And so, the Finks grew up with a sacred reverence for nature, one that often collided with a reckless passion for adventure. It is only natural that their musical vision includes a plan to canoe the entire Mississippi River while touring cities along the massive waterway.

Following their lifelong desire for a band, the Finks have extended their brotherhood into an epic collective of like-minded souls, known throughout the world as The Giving Tree Band. Further inspired by extraordinary adventurers who led impressive supporting casts, the GTB has become a modern musical version of such historical outfits as Ben Franklin and The Honest Whigs, Frank and Jesse and The James Gang, and Theodore Roosevelt and The Rough Riders.

Though the story of The Giving Tree Band is still being written, it can already be said that these musical frontiersmen are redefining “virtuosity,” which is traditionally understood as dizzying displays of technical wizardry. But what is missing from this definition is the root word–Virtue. And it is upon this foundation of Virtue that The Giving Tree Band weaves their musical tapestry–by playing every single note with integrity in order to purposefully craft each part, by playing every single part with humility in order to serve the song, by playing every single song with honesty in order to resonate with the listeners at the show, by playing every single show with gratitude in order to appreciate this special privilege in life, and by playing life with a heart full of love in order to realize that it is all music, and it is all beautiful.

Hailing from Dallas, TX, the four piece country-rock outfit Somebody’s Darling came up in a part of the nation where soutern meets western and urban meets rural, so it’s no surprise how effortlessly this group of twenty-somethings blends rock energy with country sensibilities. Their tunes sound just as good alongside Ryan Adams and The Stones as they do Cross Canadian Ragweed and Chris Knight. Since the group formed in August ‘07 their stock has been rapidly rising.

In early 2009, Jared (vocals/guitar) and Kenny (drums) began writing/rehearsing new music . Jared strummed his acoustic guitar, and crooned out prairie-plucked, windswept tunes while good neighbor Kenny drummed on a pillow…and revival broke out. Before they knew it, Caleb (keys/trumpet), Ryan (pedal steel /guitar/dobro), and Natalie(singer/percussionist), were caught up in the western Oklahoma winds of change, and Green Corn Revival was born. Stephen (guitar) and Miles (bass guitar) hitched their wagons to the fast moving train a few months later, and the rest is history. Oklahoma history, that is. GCR has graced the Midwestern stages of Cain’s Ballroom, Lawrence’s Jackpot Music Hall, and Oklahoma City’s Conservatory to name a few, and is soon to appear at NX35 festival in Denton, TX, and Austin’s SXSW. They’ve played with a delightful assortment of artists, including The Watson Twins, Cotton Jones, and Two Tons of Steel, and Greg Ginn of Black Flag, and many more. GCR will open for and play with Wanda Jackson, the Queen of Rockabilly herself, at SXSW 2010. Like born and bred western pioneers, the magnificent seven have written, produced, and recorded their entire discography independently in their private musical lair, North Broadway Studio, of Hydro, OK. The August release of “The Oklahoma EP” met with critical acclaim, and fans eagerly await the 2010 release of the band’s debut full-length album, “Say You’re a Sinner”. “… a sound marrying rebellion with luscious melodies… The brisk “Hang On” breezes through twangy guitar pangs into full, gorgeous melodies before deconstructing itself into riled, punchy bridges. “Never That Easy” sinks from vivacious, dazzling wafts into vintage banjo shakes and breakneck drumline.
